Staff Backend Engineer, Payments

Payments are the part of Aviy that absolutely cannot be wrong. You will own the services that charge cards, settle to our customers’ own connected accounts, and reconcile every transaction — the code where a rounding error is a customer’s rent.

What you’ll do

• Own the payment pipeline end to end: Stripe Connect, PayPal, webhooks and reconciliation
• Design idempotent, replay-safe handlers for every provider event we consume
• Build the reconciliation tooling that proves our ledger matches the processor’s
• Lead the technical design for multi-currency settlement and payout scheduling
• Set the standard for how money-handling code is written, tested and reviewed
• Partner with Compliance on KYC, SCA and regional payment requirements

What we’re looking for

• 8+ years in backend engineering, with multiple years on payments or financial systems
• Deep practical knowledge of Stripe (Connect especially) or an equivalent processor
• Instinct for idempotency, exactly-once semantics and failure modes under retry
• Experience designing systems where correctness beats throughput
• Able to explain a settlement bug to a non-engineer without losing the detail

This role is based in London, UK, with a mix of office and home working — most people are in two or three days a week.
