How the Markup Calculator works

Formula
Selling price = Cost × (1 + Markup% ÷ 100)

Markup is the amount you add on top of your cost to reach a selling price, expressed as a percentage of the cost. Add a 50% markup to a $100 cost and you sell at $150. Most people price this way because they start from what something costs them.

The catch is that markup and margin are not the same thing. A 50% markup is only a 33.3% profit margin, because margin is measured against the higher selling price rather than the cost. This calculator shows both so you can see the real profit a given markup produces before you commit to it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add a markup to cost?

Multiply the cost by (1 + markup ÷ 100). A $100 cost with a 50% markup gives a $150 selling price.

Is markup the same as margin?

No. A 50% markup on cost is only a 33.3% margin on price. This tool shows both so you can price with confidence.

What markup should I use?

Common retail markups run 50–100%, but pick a number that covers your costs and leaves the margin your business needs.
