How the UK VAT Calculator works

Formula
Gross = Net × 1.20 · Net = Gross ÷ 1.20 (at 20%)

UK VAT is charged at a standard rate of 20% on most goods and services, with a reduced 5% rate on some items and 0% on others such as most food and children’s clothing. To add 20% VAT you multiply the net by 1.2; to strip it out of a gross price you divide by 1.2. This calculator does both instantly at any rate.

If your VAT-taxable turnover passes the registration threshold (£90,000 as of 2024/25) you must register, charge VAT on your invoices, and can reclaim VAT on business costs. Even below the threshold, knowing the net and VAT split keeps your quotes and records accurate.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK VAT rate?

The standard rate is 20%. A reduced 5% rate applies to some goods (e.g. home energy) and a 0% rate to others (e.g. most food and children’s clothes).

How do I remove 20% VAT from a price?

Divide the gross price by 1.2. A £120 gross price contains £20 of VAT and £100 net.

When must I register for VAT?

UK businesses must register once VAT-taxable turnover passes the registration threshold (£90,000 as of 2024/25). Check GOV.UK for the current figure.
