How the Sales Tax Calculator works
Sales tax is a single tax added at the point of final sale, unlike VAT which applies at every stage. The rate depends on where the sale takes place — in the US the combined state and local rate can range from 0% to over 10%, so the same product carries a different total in different places.
To find the total a customer pays, multiply the subtotal by the tax rate and add it back on. If you sell across regions, remember you may need to charge the rate for the customer’s location rather than your own.

How do I calculate sales tax?
Multiply the subtotal by the tax rate ÷ 100, then add it to the subtotal for the total. This tool does both instantly.
What sales-tax rate should I use?
Use the combined state + local rate for where the sale happens. Rates vary widely in the US — check your jurisdiction.
Is sales tax the same as VAT?
No. Sales tax is charged once at the final sale; VAT is charged at each stage of the supply chain. Use the VAT calculator for VAT.
